New Year's Eve

Be safe everyone. Seriously. I know some of us, ok a lot of us, are planning to do some heavy drinking tonight. Be safe, be smart. Have a designated driver, have the number for a local cab company programmed in your speed dial, call your neighbor, call a friend, heck if you have to, call the cops and say you are too drunk to drive home and need a ride. Most of the time they would rather give you a ride than have to deal with the heartache and paperwork that will come from you trying to drive drunk and wrecking.

That admonishment done, I hope everyone has fun tonight. Don't overdo it, and have fun tomorrow!! I know I will. I'm close to being ready to send the next book in to the publisher. I know I'm about two weeks late but with my computer dying and having to try to get by on a dinosaur for a while, it's been rough. But things are going well now. Hopefully I'll be able to start releasing information on this next exciting installment in the Southern Family Ties series.

So we know my plans, write, write, revise, write. What are some of your plans for tonight? For New Year's day? Let me know. I actually like to know. Who knows, some of your New Year's activities could make their way into a book at some point.

Southern Families

A Southern Family is a curious thing. We are not made up of just blood relatives. In fact, there is the common saying of "I have blood that ain't family and family that ain't blood." I know some of you might know what that means, but others don't. It literally means what it says. Just because you have a genetic connection to someone doesn't mean they are family and care about you. Likewise, there are those you will have no blood or genetic connection to that will be there for you no matter what. They are the family you make in life.

Family trees in the south are so convoluted that it almost takes a southern mind to follow a relationship from one end of the thread to the other. If I were to say that was my ex-husband's ex-wife's daughter's cousin's daughter's boyfriend, some might be able to follow the relationship. Most of them aren't that simple though. It's the test of a true Southerner to be able to follow the most convoluted relationship from one end of the description to the other. Realizing there is no blood tie between me and the girlfriend at the end of that description is the beginning of understanding a Southern Family Tree.

Just because you are blood related to someone, doesn't mean they are going to treat you like family is supposed to. Family is supposed to be there for you, have your back no matter what. There are times when you get treated so poorly by blood relatives you have to cut them out of your family tree. But there is hope. In a Southern Family, you can also graft in branches to your tree for people that have earned a place in your heart as family. These are the people that call your parents "Mom" and "Dad" and vice versa. They may even "adopt" your family and call them aunt and uncle or grams and gramps.

To really understand a Southern Family, you have to live it, experience it. It's rewarding, and it will gain you a support network that will last your entire life. And really, would take more than the space I have here to explain it.

This year's toll

We have lost so many people this year, the latest being Carrie Fisher. She was an icon of her age. I have to admit that she gave me some measure of confidence that I could be strong and beautiful and successful and important and loved too. She played all of these things. A woman who didn't fear asking for help from those she knew could and would give it. A princess and a warrior. A woman and a leader. This is what she showed me I could be. And I will be eternally grateful to her for this.

I know my blog really should be longer, but I honestly can't think of anything else to be said about the situation. Other than this. People, please stop challenging 2016 to top itself. It keeps taking icons from my youth.

Santa Loves ME

Santa exists people. He really does.

As you know, my computer moved to that great circuit board in the sky a couple weeks ago. I got the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. I didn't know what I was going to do. Mom gave me her dinosaur to use to keep plugging away, but it was so old and decrepit that I couldn't get it to log online and let me do what I need to do to keep in touch with everyone or do what I needed to do to finish my next book on time.

All that changed today. Today, my faith in Santa was restored. Today, I was gifted with a new computer. Santa does love me.

So I am back in force, people! No more missing blogs, no more slacking on sending out my newsletter, no more excuses for not working on my next book! I am stoked! Are you with me? I said ARE YOU WITH ME?

This next year is going to totally rock!

Last Minute gifts

As you know, I'm an author. I love books. I love them so much that I'm creating more for the world to enjoy. There is nothing I love more than receiving a book or a gift card to a book store as a gift. Considering my book collection has been decimated over the years through moving several times (how do you lose a box of books when you move, someone tell me please.), people can pretty much just buy me a book now and I'll be happy.

For those of you who HAVEN'T moved and lost their library over the years, a gift card is the way to go. The recipient will LOVE IT. It says that you care enough to know that they love books, but that you also don't want to buy them something that they already have. I love Shakespeare, I've had his complete works three times and lost them all three times. I'm working at rebuilding my collection though.

Ok, time for some shameless self-promoting. My book, Family Fortune, is available on amazon.com and other fine online book retailers. With second day shipping, there is even time to get it for Christmas, the perfect gift for those hard to please people on your list who like romance but detest books with people hopping in and out of bed like they are playing on a trampoline. It's also nice for the history buffs out there.
